Investigation of chemical composition, anticholinesterase, antioxidant, antihemolytic and antibacterial activities of essential oil and ethanol extract from aerial parts of Algerian Ammoides verticillata (Brot.) Breistr

ABSTRACT        The essential oil (EO) and ethanolic extract (EE) of Algerian Ammoides verticillata (Brot.) Breistr. were investigated for chemical composition and biological activities. GC and GC/MS analyses of the EO revealed thymol, carvacrol, p-cymene, limonene, and γ-terpinene as major compounds. HPLC/DAD/UV analysis of EE identified luteolin 7-O-glucoside as the most prominent component. The EO showed moderate inhibition activity against acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase (AChE and BChE) compared to galanthamine, while no activity for EE was observed. Both extracts showed higher to similar antioxidant activity to that of BHT in DPPH and ABTS•+ radical scavenging activity and ferric and copper reduction power. Nevertheless, weak β-carotene bleaching inhibition activity was noted for both extracts. Additionally, the EE displayed a significant antihemolytic effect against AAPH-induced hemolysis. Moreover, EO and EE showed high and no antibacterial activities, respectively. Thus, A. verticillata might represent a useful material in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic applications.

Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of geranium (pelargonium graveolens L’Hér.) essential oil as affected by the growing biotope

ABSTRACT This study investigated the variability of antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil (EO) from geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) aerial parts, collected from four Tunisian regions. The highest EO yield was obtained in Korba, followed by Beja, Tozeur and Sfax. In all regions, geranium EO was rich in oxygenated monoterpenes mainly due to the predominance of citronellol and geraniol. Antioxidant potential of geranium EO was evaluated by DPPH, ABTS, iron reducing power and β-carotene bleaching assays. Independently of region, geranium EO showed a weak antioxidant potential as compared to the positive control BHT. However, geranium EO was endowed with important antibacterial properties. In fact, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were the most sensitive strains than Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus hirae. These findings suggested that geranium EO could be used as new and rich potential sources of many future multipurpose products for food preservation, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications.

Essential oils: a systematic review on revolutionizing health, nutrition, and omics for optimal well-being.

Essential oils from various plants have diverse therapeutic properties and are researched extensively. They have applications in medicine, aromatherapy, microbiology, agriculture, livestock, and the food industry, benefiting the population. This systematic review followed the PRISMA verification protocol. The study focused on the anti-inflammatory effects, nutraceutical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of essential oils in lemon, orange, cumin, cinnamon, coriander, rosemary, thyme, and parsley. We also looked at their presence in the diet, their effect, their mechanism of action on health, and the most important active compounds. The search was conducted in the PubMed database for the last 12 years of publications, including in vitro, in vivo, and online cell model tests. Essential oils have been shown to have multiple health benefits, primarily due to their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. The mechanism of action of cinnamon oil alters bacterial membranes, modifies lipid profiles, and inhibits cell division, giving a potential benefit in protection against colitis. On the other hand, a significant improvement was observed in the diastolic pressure of patients with metabolic syndrome when supplementing them with cumin essential oil. The antimicrobial properties of coriander essential oil, especially its application in seafood like tilapia, demonstrate efficacy in improving health and resistance to bacterial infections. Cumin essential oil treats inflammation. Parsley essential oil is an antioxidant. Orange peel oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and pro-oxidative. Lemon essential oil affects mouse intestinal microbiota. Thyme essential oil protects the colon against damage and DNA methylation. Carnosic acid in rosemary oil can reduce prostate cancer cell viability by modifying the endoplasmic reticulum function. Essential oils have many therapeutic and antiparasitic properties. They are beneficial to human health in many ways. However, to understand their potential benefits, more research is needed regarding essential oils such as coriander, parsley, rosemary, cumin, and thyme. These research gaps are relevant since they restrict understanding of the possible benefits of these crucial oils for health-related contexts.

Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix DC) leaves from East Borneo

Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix DC) leaves are a versatile plant with high commercialization potential. In the pharmaceutical industry, kaffir lime leaf essential oil is used to stimulate appetite, as a cosmetic ingredient, and as an antibacterial agent. Although most studies have concentrated on the essential oil of kaffir lime leaves, its components and biological activities need to be considered based on the growing location. The chemical components and biological activity of kaffir lime leaf essential oil are affected by differences in growth location. This research was conducted to determine the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of the essential oil of kaffir lime leaf essential oil from East Borneo. Fresh and dried kaffir lime leaves were extracted by steam distillation method and chemical compound analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the antibacterial activity of essential oils was analyzed by disc diffusion method. There are twenty-five compounds in the essential oil of fresh and dried kaffir lime leaves. The main components of fresh kaffir lime leave essential oil were citronellal (77.29%), linalool (4.88%), sabinene (4.83%), citronellol (3.41%), β-myrcene (1.23%), and citronellal (74.09%), sabinene (5.54%), linalool (3.59%), citronellol (3.56%), caryophyllene (2.26%) were the main components of the essential oil of dried kaffir lime leaves. The antibacterial activity of essential oils against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25925 and Escherichia coli ATCC 8733, with zones of inhibition of 21.75 and 19.17 mm, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration on all antibacterial activities was 6.25 μL/mL. Chemical Composition, Anti-bacterial Activity and Molecular Docking Studies of Essential Oil Isolated from Sa Sam Nam (Launaea sarmentosa).

Launaea sarmentosa, also known as Sa Sam Nam, is a widely used remedy in Vietnamese traditional medicine and cuisine. However, the chemical composition and bioactivity of its essential oil have not been elucidated yet. In this study, we identified 40 compounds (98.6% of total peak area) in the essential oil via GC-MS analysis at the first time. Among them, five main compounds including Thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether (52.4%), (E)-α-Atlantone (9.0%), Neryl isovalerate (6.6%), Davanol D2 (isomer 2) (3.9%), and trans-Sesquisabinene hydrate (3.9%) have accounted for 75.8% of total peak area. The anti-bacterial activity of the essential oil against 4 microorganisms including Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa has also investigated via agar well diffusion assay. The results showed that the essential oil exhibited a strong antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis with the inhibition zones ranging from 8.2 to 18.7 mm. To elucidate the anti-bacterial effect mechanism of the essential oil, docking study of five main compounds of the essential oil (Thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether, (E)-α-Atlantone, Neryl isovalerate, Davanol D2 (isomer 2), and trans-Sesquisabinene hydrate) against some key proteins for bacterial growth such as DNA gyrase B, penicillin binding protein 2A, tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase, and dihydrofolate reductase were performed. The results showed that the main constituents of essential oil were highly bound with penicillin binding protein 2A with the free energies ranging -27.7 to -44.8 kcal/mol, which suggests the relationship between the antibacterial effect of essential oil and the affinity of main compounds with penicillin binding protein. In addition, the free energies of main compounds of the essential oil with human cyclooxygenase 1, cyclooxygenase 2, and phospholipase A2, the crucial proteins related with inflammatory response were less than diclofenac, a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug. These findings propose the essential oil as a novel and promising anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory medicine or cosmetic products.

Anti-bacterial activity of essential oils against multidrug-resistant foodborne pathogens isolated from raw milk.

The presence of pathogenic bacteria in food is considered as a primary cause of food-borne illness and food quality deterioration worldwide. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of five essential oils (EOs) against multidrug-resistant foodborne pathogens. In the current study Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia, Enterobacter, Citrobacter, Proteus, Pseudomonas, and Klebsiella) and the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus were isolated from raw milk and biochemically characterized. The anti-bacterial effect of different antibiotics and EOs (thyme, oregano, lemongrass, mint, and rosemary) was determined using the standard disc diffusion method. The antibiogram study revealed that Gram-negative bacteria were highly resistant to penicillin while Staphylococcus was resistant to streptomycin, amoxicillin, and lincomycin. Moderate resistance was observed to doxycycline, amikacin, enrofloxacin, kanamycin and cefixime. Isolates were found less resistant to gentamycin, chloramphenicol, and ciprofloxacin. EOs showed a broad range of antimicrobial activity against all bacteria except P. aeruginosa. Of these, thyme was more effective against most of the multi-drug resistant bacterial strains and formed the largest zone of inhibition (26 mm) against Escherichia followed by oregano oil (18 mm) against Staphylococcus (p<0.05). Klebsiella spp and Citrobacter spp showed resistance to mint and lemongrass oil respectively. The EOs such as lemongrass, mint and rosemary were less active against all the bacteria. The findings of the recent study suggest the use of EOs as natural antibacterial agents for food preservation.

Chemical Composition and Antibacterial activity of Essential Oils from Fruits of Vismia baccifera and Vismia macrophylla Collected at different Locations in Venezuelan Andes

Background: Genus Vismia (Hipericaceae/Clusiaceae) is distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical areas of Central America and South America although some species have been reported in Africa as well. Species of this genus have been used in traditional medicine to alleviate different ailments such as skin infections, to treat urinary tract disorders, as antirrheumatic, antipyretic, among others. Previous investigations have revealed that species from Vismia genus are composed mainly of terpenes, anthrones, lignans, flavonoids, anthraquinones, steroids and xanthones. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils from the fruits of V. baccifera and V. macrophylla collected in Venezuelan Andes. Methods: Vimia species were collected at different locations in Mérida and Táchira state, Venezuela. Essential oils were obtained through Hidrodistilation and chemical compositon was performed by GC and GC/MS techniques. Antimicrobial analysis was carried out by disc diffusion assays. Results: GC and GC/MS analysis showed that these species are mainly composed of sesquiterpenes being α-curcumene, β-curcumene, germacrene D, γ-bisabolene and β-caryophyllene among the major components. Antimicrobial activity was also performed with species under investigation. Results showed a broad spectrum of activity since both species were able to inhibit not only Gram- positive (Stpahylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) but yeast (Candida albicans and Candida krusei) as well. Conclusions: According to the results observed in the investigation, Vismia species might be considered as an alternative to aid infectious diseases.

Nanoencapsulated Thymus daenensis and Mentha piperita essential oil for bacterial and biofilm eradication using microfluidic technology

The use of essential oil (EO) nanoemulsions is expanding to meet customer demand for all-natural antibacterial agents. Thymus daenensis (T) and Mentha piperita (M) EOs were employed to make nanoemulsions (TEO and MEO NE), using Tween 80/Span 80 as surfactant/cosurfactant and a high-speed homogenizer. The TEO and MEO NEs were then characterized in terms of particle size (121, 113 nm), surface charge (-11.2 and −12.6 mV), morphology, and stability over time. Then, the antibacterial activity of EOs and their nanoformulations against Escherichia coli (E. coli) were evaluated based on various residence times, and concentrations on a microfluidic chip. The release of cytoplasmic constituents was used to compare the antibacterial activity of bulk EOs and nanoformulations. After completing MIC, MBC, and time-killing assays, the inhibitory effect of nanoformulations on E. coli biofilm formation was examined. Remarkable intensification was observed by employing a microfluidic chip owing to high-contact surface area provision between nanoemulsions and bacteria. Once compared to the conventional method for 3 h operation, the bacterial activity was nearly completely inhibited in a 24-min residence time using nanoemulsions. After 6 min of treatment, the cell membrane began to rupture, indicating that nanoemulsions could improve the antibacterial activity of bulk essential oils.

Antimicrobial activity of essential oils (Citrus bergamia Risso & Poiteau, Melaleuca alternifolia and Chenopodium botrys) on pathogen strains isolated in milk samples from mastitic sheep

The aim of this investigation was to study in vitro antibacterial activity of essential oils (EOs) (Citrus bergamia Risso & Poiteau, Melaleuca alternifolia and Chenopodium botrys) on pathogenic strains isolated in milk samples from mastitic sheep. The in vitro antibacterial activity showed that EOs induced higher bacterial inhibition against pathogens isolated in mastitic milk (Staphylococcus xylosus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus salivarius, Enterococcus faecium, Streptococcus agalactiae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) than common antimicrobial agents used in veterinary medicine, with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values significantly lower, excepted for P. Aeruginosa. The antibacterial activity of EOs has been attributed to the chemical composition of each phyto-complexes, constituted by monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and their associated alcohols, identified by GC-MS analysis, with a synergic action in the bacterial cells. The results obtained confirmed in vitro antimicrobial activity of these EOs and their potential use in the treatment of sheep mastitis infection.

A comparative study on chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils from the aerial parts and roots of Laportea bulbifera (Siebold & Zucc.) Wedd. growing in the Central Himalayan region

The GC and GC/MS analysis of the essential oil samples obtained separately from whole aerial parts and the roots of Laportea bulbifera resulted in the identification of a total of 40 compounds from the whole aerial parts and 45 compounds from the roots representing 89.7% and 82.9%, respectively, of the total essential oil composition. The essential oil from aerial parts is dominated by oxygenated sesquiterpenes (66.4%) with α-elemol (55.1%), germacrene D-4-ol (4.2%), linalool (3.5%) and phytol (3.4%) as the major constituents while the root essential oil is dominated by oxygenated monoterpenes (30.4%) with trans-myrtanol (16.3%), cis-myrtanol (11.6%), nopinone (7.8%), cadin-4-en-10-ol (4.7%), and α-elemol (3.4%) as major constituents. The essential oil from whole aerial parts showed bactericidal effect at 250 µL/mL concentration (MBC) against Pasteurella multocida and Dickeya dadantii while the root essential oil exhibited bactericidal effect at 125 µL/mL against Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Xanthomonas phaseoli, and Dickeya dadantii.

New Facts on the Antimicrobial Essential Oil of Satureja kitaibelii.

The objective of the present study was to assess the difference in antimicrobial activity of Satureja kitaibelii Wierzb. ex Heuff. essential oil at three growth stages. In addition, using statistical and chemometric tools, we tried to explain why the essential oil from a certain vegetation stage shows the highest antimicrobial activity. S. kitaibelii essential oils demonstrated minimum inhibitory concentration values from 160 to 10000 μg mL-1 , and minimum microbicidal concentration values from 630 to 20000 μg mL-1 . Geraniol, borneol, limonene and p-cymene are the dominant compounds of S. kitaibelii essential oil. The most abundant compound, geraniol, possesses antimicrobial activity in a range of MIC values from 40 to 5000 μg mL-1 and MMC values from 80 to 10000 μg mL-1 . The highest activity of essential oil for all tested strains of microorganisms was recorded in November. Results of statistical analysis indicate that the percentage of dominant compounds of essential oils does not affect the antibacterial activity of essential oils. Chemometric analyses leads to the conclusion that borneol, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide and limonene can be the main contributors to the antibacterial activity of essential oil from November and that their mutual ratio is important. These results may represent a new methodological approach for future research on essential oils.

Antifungal and Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oils of Kaffir Citrus Fruit Peel Extract Against Important Pathogens of Citrus Plants

Penyakit utama tanaman jeruk yang disebabkan oleh cendawan dan bakteri dapat menghambat pertumbuhan tanaman sehingga berdampak terhadap penurunan produksi tanaman. Pengendalian yang diterapkan selama ini kebanyakan menggunakan pestisida kimia sintetis yang berpotensi memberi dampak negatif pada lingkungan dan kesehatan. Minyak atsiri dari kulit buah jeruk purut (Citrus hystric) mempunyai kandungan senyawa yang berpotensi dalam menghambat pertumbuhan patogen pada tanaman jeruk. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui aktivitas antifungal dan antibakteri minyak atsiri kulit buah jeruk purut pada lima konsentrasi 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, dan 5% terhadap patogen tanaman jeruk, yaitu Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, dan Xanthomonas axonopodis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa semua konsentrasi minyak atsiri yang diujikan mempunyai daya hambat kategori rendah terhadap F. oxysporum, dan kategori sedang terhadap C. gloeosporioides. Pengujian terhadap X. axonopodis menunjukkan daya hambat kategori kuat untuk konsentrasi 3% dan 5%. Minyak atsiri kulit buah jeruk purut berpotensi sebagai antifungal dan antibakteri pada tanaman jeruk dan dapat digunakan sebagai teknologi alternatif pengendalian yang ramah lingkungan dan aman.

Phytochemical analysis and biological activities of essential oils extracted from Origanum grossii and Thymus pallidus: in vitro and in silico analysis

The study aimed at investigating the phytochemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oils (EOs) of Origanum grossii and Thymus pallidus. The selection of these plants for the study was driven by a comprehensive survey conducted in the Ribat Elkheir region of Morocco, where these plants are widely utilized. The results reflect the valorization of these plants based on the findings of the regional survey. The GC–MS phytochemical analysis revealed that the main constituents of the essential oil were carvacrol and thymol for O. grossii and T. pallidus respectively. Quantitative assays demonstrated that O. grossii exhibited higher levels of polyphenols (0.136 mg AGE/mg EO) and flavonoids (0.207 mg QE/mg EO) compared to T. pallidus. The DPPH assay indicated that O. grossii EOs possessed approximately twice the antiradical activity of T. pallidus, with IC50 values of approximately 0.073 mg/mL and 0.131 mg/mL, respectively. The antibacterial activity tests showed that both essential oils exhibited significant inhibition zones ranging from 26 to 42 mm against all tested bacterial strains. The MIC values varied among the bacteria, generally falling within the range of 0.31 to 2.44 µg/mL, demonstrating the potency of the EOs to serve as antibacterial. Molecular docking revealed that O. grossii and T. pallidus essential oils interact with antibacterial and antioxidant proteins (1AJ6 and 6QME). Key compounds in O. grossii include p-cymene, eucalyptol, and carvacrol, while T. pallidus contains potent chemicals like p-cymene, ɤ-maaliene, valencene, α-terpinene, caryophyllene, himachalene, and thymol. Notably, the most potent chemicals in Origanum grossii are p-cymene, eucalyptol, and carvacrol, while the most potent chemicals in Thymus pallidus are p-cymene, α-terpinene, and thymol. These findings suggest that these plant EOs could be used to develop new natural products with antibacterial and antioxidant activity.

Extraction of cellulose nanocrystalline from Camellia oleifera Abel waste shell: Study of critical processes, properties and enhanced emulsion performance

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) extracted from the waste shell of Camellia oleifera Abel (C. oleifera) are gaining attention as valuable materials. In this study, CNCs were extracted from the agricultural waste shell of C. oleifera through phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid hydrolysis, respectively. Firstly, we optimized the alkaline treatment process for cellulose isolation by using response surface methodology. Furthermore, the properties of CNCs were investigated by neutralizing them with NaOH and NH3·H2O, and by dialysis in water. In addition, the characterization methods including FT-IR, TGA, AFM and TEM were used to analysis the properties of the synthesized CNCs. Finally, CNCs were studied for their application in essential oil-based Pickering emulsions. CNCs obtained from sulfuric acid showed the smallest particle size and good dispersibility. Moreover, the release profiles of essential oils in the emulsions were followed by Peppa's kinetic release model. The antibacterial activity of the emulsions against E. coli and S. aureus showed that CNCs-stabilized emulsions enhanced the antibacterial activity of essential oils. Therefore, neutralization treatments may enhance the properties of CNCs, and CNCs stabilized Pickering emulsions can enhance antibacterial activity of essential oil. This study provides insight into the potential application of CNCs derived from C. oleifera waste shells.

Analysis of Volatile Components and Antibacterial Activity of Silver Wormwood Essential Oils from Different Habitats by E-Nose Combined with GC-MS

Electronic nose (E-nose) combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to analyze the volatile components of silver wormwood from different habitats, and the antibacterial activity of essential oils was also studied, to provide a scientific basis for quality control of silver wormwood and rational utilization of their essential oils. In this study, the total content of essential oils in silver wormwood was determined by steam distillation; the volatile components were conducted in an overall analysis by E-nose combined with chemometrics; the volatile components were analyzed and identified by GC-MS; and two G-negative bacteria and one Gram-positive bacteria were used as test bacteria to determine the antibacterial activity of the essential oils from silver wormwood. The results showed that principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of E-nose could distinguish the essential oils of silver wormwood from different habitats, and the odor difference of essential oils was obvious. A total of 87 volatile components were identified by GC-MS, and there were significant differences in components and contents in silver wormwood from different habitats; PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) could effectively distinguish silver wormwood from different habitats. The essential oils from silver wormwood from different habitats all had a certain inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Therefore, the combination of E-nose and GC-MS could quickly distinguish silver wormwood from different habitats and provide a reference for quality control, drug selection, and comprehensive utilization of silver wormwood.

Optimisation of Three Essential Oils against Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli by Mixture Designa.

The aim of this work is to optimise the antibacterial activity of essential oils (EOs) from Eucalyptus camaldulensis (ECEO), Mentha pulegium (MPEO) and Rosmarinus officinalis (ROEO) plants against Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli. The qualitative antimicrobial effect was assessed using the disc diffusion method, the broth microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). Polynomial models were created using an augmented centroid simplex mixture design to highlight the synergy of EOs. The results show a significant antibacterial effect of ECEO and MPEO against both bacterial strains, with inhibition zones (IZs) of 13 and 12 mm respectively against E. coli, and 13 and 11 mm against Salmonella spp. The latter strain showed a MIC of 0.625 % (v : v) by the ECEO, while E. coli exhibited a MIC of 0.0781 % (v : v). The binary combinations of essential oils display a synergistic effect, the proportions of the optimum EOs in the mixture giving the lowest MICm were of the order of 50.51 % ECEO and 49.49 % ROEO against Salmonella spp. and around 50 % MPEO and 50 % ECEO against E. coli. These results indicate the effectiveness of binary combinations EOs against resistant bacterial strains and suggest their importance in bacterial infections treatment.

Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil of Pelargonium graveolens and its fractions

This work aims to study the chemical composition and evaluate the antibacterial activity of Pelargonium graveolens essential oil and its fractions collected in the Er-Rachidia region of Morocco. GC-MS analysis of Pelargonium graveolens essential oil and its fractions yielded majority compounds such as; epi-γ-Eudesmol (16.67 %), Geraniol (12.54 %), β-Citronellol (12, 34 %), Citronellyl formate (7.70 %) and Geranyl tiglate (5.21 %), for the crude essential oil of Pelargonium graveolons, while the fractions that is obtained by preparative plate chromatography gave the following compounds, fraction 1 consists mainly of β-Citronellol (35. 83 %) Geraniol (38.78 %), fraction 2 is dominated by epi-γ-Eudesmol (55. 10 %) and α-agorofuran (8.41 %)), as well as fraction 3 is revealed the presence of Geranylgeraniol (23.70 %) and epi-γ-Eudesmol (17.53 %) and Phenylethyl tiglate (12.01 %), fraction 4 consists mainly of Phenylethyl tiglate (58.19 %) and α-agorofuran (8.49 %), then the fraction 5 is represented by the compound majorities such as Geranyl tiglate (30.75 %) and Geranyl butanoate (10.94 %), while the fraction 6 is characterized mainly by 1-Isopropyl-4,7-dimethyl-1,2,3,5,6,8a-hexahydronaphthalene (12.08 %). Concerning the antibacterial activity of the essential oil and its fractions 1, 2, 3, and 4 showed bactericidal power against all tested bacteria: Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhimurium, also fractions 5 and 6 have bactericidal power against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and no power against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes.
